The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 6 (SDG6) aims to provide adequate improved sanitation facilities to over 2.3 billion people around the world who have no or limited access to sanitation, wherein more than two-thirds of these un-served people live in rural areas. Eight different sanitation systems were identified by EAWAG (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology), ranging from a centralized system up to a totally decentralized system. Many researchers support that the latter type is deemed appropriate to urban slum, peri-urban and rural areas. This however entails selection of different combination of sanitation treatment technologies for the following discharges (a) blackwater, (b) graywater, and (c) storm water. A wide range of technologies for blackwater (feces and urine) treatment will be presented which includes the mechanism, development level, efficiency, advantages and disadvantages. A Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to ol will be presented as an option in determining a feasible technology for a decentralized system.
Lastly, a social perception study on the use of a decentralized system conducted in a rural community in Mulanay (Philippines) will be discussed.
