In the article, Professor Kentaro Hayashi of RIHN discusses what first drew him to nitrogen research, the benefits and drawbacks of nitrogen, and international efforts to address nitrogen-related issues.
Professor Hayashi will chair the 10th International Nitrogen Conference in Kyoto. Commenting on the conference, he said:
“The central theme is “Sustainable Nitrogen Management for Future Generations.” Ultimately, the actions we take and the decisions we make today can have a decisive impact on future generations. So, whenever we do something, we should think about whether people in the future will thank us for it or complain about it, rather than just considering our own interests. That’s the basic idea behind this concept.
It aims to bridge science and policy for nitrogen management, so we can maintain the benefits of nitrogen use while reducing threats such as air and water pollution.”
