Abstract : Sustainable Development Index (SDI), consisting of 3 pillars of sustainable development across human, national and global scales, is proposed. Social index integrates health and education indexes; an economic index integrates income inequality and GNI/capita; environmental index integrates CO2 per capita and materials footprint per capita as planetary pressures. Therefore, a proposed SDI integrates 3 pillars of sustainable development across human, country and global scales. Ranking of countries by the SDI measures, catalyzes and steers transformation towards global sustainability. Countries are divided into 3 groups of high, medium and low sustainability based on ranking by the SDI 2020 index. Countries with high planetary pressures and high inequality dropped by the SDI 2020 ranking relative to the HDI ranking 2020, in contrary, countries with low planetary pressures and low inequality are advanced. These changes in ranking by the SDI and HDI are dramatic for some countries, meaning that the SDI is a new paradigm relative to the HDI from sustainable development point of view. The SDI addresses both intragenerational and intergenerational inequality.
