FY2026 Transdisciplinary Exploratory Studies

In FY2026, RIHN has launched the Transdisciplinary Exploratory Studies (ES), which enables the implementation of small-scale, short-term research aimed at contributing to solutions for global environmental problems. Unlike previous years, preparatory research schemes for full-scale research projects such as the Incubation Studies (IS) and Feasibility Studies (FS) are not being conducted this fiscal year.

Following an open call for proposals both within Japan and internationally, and a review process based on established selection criteria, the 13 research topics listed below were selected.

Principal Investigators are appointed as RIHN Collaborative Researchers or in an equivalent capacity. They are able to participate in seminars and other events organized by RIHN, collaborate with ongoing research projects, and make use of RIHN's facilities and researcher networks. In addition, three specially appointed professors--MATSUDA Motoji, SHOBAYASHI Mikitaro, and TANIGUCHI Makoto--provide ongoing mentoring and advisory support based on their extensive experience in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research.

As a research institute with an academic foundation in transdisciplinary research that seeks pathways to solving societal and environmental challenges through collaboration among researchers as well as diverse stakeholders from the private sector, government, and other sectors, RIHN aims to broaden the base of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. Through this program, RIHN provides opportunities for early-career researchers, researchers seeking to expand their work in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary directions, as well as practitioners from industry and government to gain experience in such research approaches, while also strengthening and expanding RIHN's research networks.
