- On the one hand, India is currently flourishing with the new development policies and projects and Japan is engaging in several of the development activities in India through policy, research and implementation. On the other hand, India may be in all the development stats as per the government, the state of the environment and the environmental governance is getting worse day by day. This talk will highlight the opportunities and challenges for (Japanese) Scholars to engage in Environmental Governance activities in India. The talk is based on my experience in engaging in the environmental governance activities in India for over two decades. Managing the environment and the environmental governance per se remains a continued challenge. India has some of the best written environmental policies in the world however the implementation and monitoring of them on the ground is weak. This is further challenged by the scientisation of politics and politicisation of science. Amidst this, there still seems opportunity to engage in several Environmental Governance activities at the policy level through the respective Central Ministry (as part of international relations) and at the grass-root level through the network of organisations and scholars as evident from some of the ongoing projects. The research approach is at the core of both levels of engagement. The sectors like water, wetlands, rivers and forests are some needed areas (for conservation and governance) of intervention for the international scholars. The international engagement is an opportunity for the scholars as well as for the sectors to improve. With showcasing some examples, I invite scholars to engage in abovementioned areas of Environmental Governance activities.
