- Social-ecological degradation: The Argolid Region, Greece
- シリーズ要旨
- One challenge in the study of global environmental change is that it manifests itself differently in every place where we (can) study it. Yet to learn from this study and propose solutions to environmental problems we must compare and contrast these case studies to see if there are more general lessons to be learned. In this lecture series I will discuss various approaches to comparative environmental studies, and so to distill general insights from such case studies.
- 第3回要旨
- This presentation examines a process of social-ecological degradation in the Argolid region of Greece, where government policy subsidized production of oranges and other citrus fruit in a region that was not suited to it over the long term. The result was.rapid deterioration of the environment and the shortage of water, and also led to degradation of the society and its culture. Our research team tried to improve the situation, but that was very difficult because the population had lost know-how and tradition. Here, the fieldwork was based in economics, hydrology, and rural sociology. We made models of farmer decision-making and transformed these into computer models of socio-environmental interaction.
