International Workshop: Exploring “Ecohealth” in China and Japan

As the economic development of Asia takes an increasingly high flight and its impact on society and the environment becomes more prominent, the ways in which these changes influence human health are demanding more attention. Internationally, the term “ecohealth” has gained some currency as the overarching label for an interdisciplinary field of study that examines phenomena at the intersection of health and ecology. While the field is internally diverse, a common thread is the problem-solving orientation that brings scientists from a range of disciplines together in an integrated research effort. Often, this is complemented by an engagement of societal stakeholders in the research process. In Japan, the term ecohealth is regularly used in its directly transliterated form (エコヘルス). In China, some scholars use a similar Chinese term (生态健康), while others prefer “environment and health” (环境与健康) when referring to broadly similar research. This workshop will bring together a small group of researchers from China who engage with the environment-health interface from a number of different perspectives, as well as Japanese researchers with a similar interest, to explore the characteristics and commonalities of these approaches.

The workshop is hosted by the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature in Kyoto and organized by the NIHU project “New Developments in Ecohealth in Asia.” and “NIHU Initiative for Chinese Environmental Issues”
