地球研ではFuture Earth in Asiaの研究推進体制の構築に向けた取り組みを進めています。この度、Future Earth Interim DirectorのFrans Berkhout氏と同サイエンスコミッティー/オーストラリア国立大学教授のBai Xuemei氏、さらにInternationalSTART Secretariat Executive DirectorのHassan Virjiをお招きし、Future Earthの目指すものや課題についてお話しいただくことになりました。Future Earthについて情報共有、意見交換の場を持ち、皆さんと活発な議論を行いたいと思います。皆様ぜひご参加くださいますようご案内いたします。

Berkhout氏は、英国Economic and Social Research CouncilやAmsterdam Global Change Institute等を経て、2013年7月Future Earth の暫定ダイレクタ―に就任されました。IPCC Fifth Assessment Reportの執筆に携わる他、数々の科学/政策顧問を歴任し、2004年から2011年にかけては、IHDPのIndustrial Transformation projectのチェアを務められました。
Bai氏は、特に中国、アジア―太平洋地域を中心に、都市化と環境変化への影響について様々な角度から研究を続け、IHDPのVice Chairとしても活躍されました。
Virji 氏は、Climate Dynamics Program of the US National Science Foundation Program Director、International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme Deputy Executive Directorなど要職を歴任し、National Research Council of the National Academies of the USAのLifetime National Associateでもあります。

Professor Frans Berkhout is the new Interim Director of Future Earth, a major new interdisciplinary research programme on global sustainability. He will lead the implementation of Future Earth - bringing existing and new research communities and stakeholders together to deliver solutions-oriented knowledge for global sustainability. He will take up his 18 month role on July 1, 2013. By the time he completes his mandate, Future Earth will be fully operational, with a permanent, regionally-distributed programme secretariat in place Professor Berkhout earned his Ph.D. in Science and Technology Policy Studies in 1989 from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom and from 1999 to 2004 was involved in leading a number of research programmes on global change and sustainability for the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council. From 2004 to 2012 he was the Director of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at the VU University Amsterdam and was from 2010 to 2013 director of the Amsterdam Global Change Institute. Between 2004 and 2011, he chaired the Industrial Transformation project of the International Human Dimensions Project. He is a lead author in Working Group 2 of the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and holds a number of other scientific and policy advisory roles.
Xuemei Bai is a Professor of Urban Environment and Human Ecology at the Fenner School of Environment and Society, Australian National University.
Her research focuses on urban sustainability sciences, including urbanization and environmental change at local, regional and global scales, urban system spatial and temporal dynamics, cities and climate change, urban policy and governance, the impact of urbanization on agricultural productivity and food security, and environmental policy in China. Her work has a strong focus on the Asia-Pacific region.
Professor Bai served as a Vice Chair of the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP) and a member of the Science Steering Committee of the IHDP Industrial Transformation Core Project. She was a Lead Author on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the Global Energy Assessment. She has served on several high level policy related study committees in China and Japan, and the National Academy of Sciences (USA).
Hassan Virji holds academic degrees from the Universities of Dares Salaam, Nairobi and Wisconsin. He was on the academic and research faculty at the University of Nairobi and the University of Wisconsin, and was a Senior Fellow at the Wissenschaft Kolleg in Berlin. He has worked as the Program Director for the Climate Dynamics Program of the US National Science Foundation, Deputy Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, and Executive Secretary of the US Inter-agency Subcommittee on Global Change Research where he was involved in setting up the US Global Change Research Program. Dr. Virji is a Lifetime National Associate of the National Research Council of the National Academies of the USA. He is a member of the Governing Boards of the International Centers of excellence located at CSIR/South Africa and the Academia Sinica/Taipei, member of the International Steering Board of UK-based Education, Learning, and research for Humanitarian Assistance, and member of the Board of Civilian Research and Development Foundation of USA.
He serves on the editorial boards of “Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability” and “Advances in Climate Change Research”.
