Job Description | The Working Group 2 of the RIHN Project “An Interdisciplinary Study toward Clean Air, Public Health and Sustainable Agriculture: The Case of Crop Residue Burning in North India” (Aakash) (Leader: Sachiko Hayashida) addresses air pollution caused by large-scale post-harvest burning of rice-straw in October and November in the states of Punjab and Haryana in North-West India. The burning causes severe air pollution in the surrounding areas, most notably in the Delhi-National Capital Region. The successful candidate is expected to perform the following tasks. 1) The researcher will analyze remote sensing data from space and ground-based data to reveal distribution of PM2.5 and other related air pollutants over North India by using numerical model simulations. Evaluate the effects of straw burning in the farming areas on air pollution in surrounding areas. 2) Promoting transdisciplinary studies with stakeholders relevant to the northern India air pollution issue. 3) Supporting symposiums, research meetings, and outreaching activities organized by Aakash Project. |
Qualifications | 1) PhD or equivalent, having the ability to carry out research on his/her own. If you are expecting to obtain a PhD, please specify in your resume. 2) Skills in numerical model development for air pollution studies will be advantageous. 3) Large volume data processing skills using Python, Fortran etc. 4) Desirable to speak, present, write papers, and communicate with overseas collaborators in English (and Japanese if possible). 5) Ability to cooperate with project members to promote smooth operation of the project and publication of research results. |
Terms of Employment | As early as possible after April 1, 2023 until March 31, 2024, renewable annually until March 31, 2025. |
Working Hours | Based on the general working hours of Mon. – Fri. 8:30-17:00 (excluding the 12:15-13:00 lunch break), with discretionary employment system of professional work. Holidays: Japanese national holidays and 29 December – 3 January. |
Salary | Daily Wage: 15,170 JPY |
Other Allowances | Commuter Allowance, Rent Allowance, and Overtime Allowance (No other compensations, awards and termination benefits). |
Insurances | Health Insurance (Mutual aid association of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) and the Employees’ Pension Insurance, and the Employment Insurance in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. |

Others | *The applicant who has excellent research achievements and is judged to play an important role in the project may be hired as a senior project researcher. *Travel cost (flight and per diem) will be provided for the relocation to Kyoto in accordance with the regulations of RIHN. *RIHN seeks to prevent passive smoking by prohibiting smoking in all our facilities except in designated areas. |
