The Netherlands is a small country with in its name exactly what poses a challenge to its longevity in the future: it consists of low-lying land, with some of its most important economic infrastructure below sea level. With ongoing sea level rise as a result of gradual climate change, it is evident important decisions are to be made regarding water safety. However, more than just the current generation is affected by these type of decisions: future generations typically have no say in how to deal with situations that concern them, for the obvious reason they cannot currently voice their concerns. Future Design, as a mechanism to represent these future generations, has for that reason been tested in a Dutch policy setting. Although Future Design has been applied only limitedly so far, the further stimulation and proliferation of this method in the Netherlands might serve as an excellent way to safeguard the interests of both its current and future generations in the face of climate change. This seminar will go over the setup as well as the results of Future Design in the Netherlands
