| プログラム | Lecturer: HIRA, Anil (Simon Fraser University, /フェローシップ外国人研究員Visiting Research Fellow, RIHN) Title: The Global Challenge of Plastic Waste: Pathway to Solutions Abstract: Mountains of plastic waste that are accumulating around the world. Annual production of plastics has doubled from 234 Mt (Million tonnes) in 2000 to 460 in 2019, while plastic waste had doubled from 156 Mt in 2000 to 353Mt in 2019. Two thirds of global plastic waste goes to packaging (40%); consumer products (12%) and textiles (11%) with lifespans of less than 5 years. Only 9% of that waste is recycled, with 19% being burned and 50% going to sanitary landfills. The remaining 22% is disposed of in uncontrolled ways, including dumpsites, burning in open pits, or simply being dumped into waterways. As a result, there is an estimated 109 Mt of plastics accumulated in rivers and another 30 Mt in oceans (OECD 2022). Based on the ongoing work of Hira with Dr. Asari of RIHN, this talk examines the sources of the global plastic waste problem. It provides and overview of Canadian plastic policies, and briefly compares them with Japanese policies, revealing progress and serious limitations. We then turn to the largest source of unmanaged waste, namely the Global South, using a case study from Nepal to examine the challenges and initiatives to address this increasing concern. The talk closes with some ideas around new strategies for policy to reduce plastic waste more effectively, including research developed during the RIHN fellowship. |
