| プログラム | Lecturer: LUKMAN, Kevin Muhamad (Universitas Padjadjaran, /フェローシップ外国人研究員Visiting Research Fellow, RIHN) Title: “Perception of Water Resource in Wangi-wangi Island: Understanding the Change and Impact of Tourism Development” Abstract: Small islands play an important role in tourism development with their pristine environment and rich biodiversity. However, small island destinations are vulnerable from multiple threats of anthropogenic activities, in particular the issue of groundwater. This study investigated the locals’ perception in Wangi-wangi island, a famous tourism destination in Indonesia, focusing on issue of groundwater availability, with the aim to understand the social perspective of groundwater utilization. We analyzed various perceptions of groundwater, including quality and quantity change, source of utilization, threats, ecosystems importance, and impact of tourism through descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Preliminary results indicate that majority of the locals prefer to use their own groundwater source instead of the public infrastructure, citing the issue of pricing and quality of the service to be inadequate. As the public infrastructure was recently built around 2005, the locals who have utilized groundwater before that are also hesitant to change, with reason of different taste of the water. In addition, despite Wangi-wangi tourism development in various sites around the island, the locals still perceived tourism sector in positive manner. Our findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders in developing strategies to encourage people to transition into public infrastructure and reducing the pressure of groundwater usage. This research also contributes to the overall LINKAGE project to provide social perspective for comprehensive approach of adaptive governance for groundwater, as well as bridging for dissemination activities and collaboration with multiple stakeholders for next year program in Wangi-wangi. |
