1st International Symposium Report

 

Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN), belonging to the National Institutes for the Humanities held the RIHN First International Symposium “Water and Better Human Life in the Future Ein order to examine transversely and summarize results of the five research projects which will be completed in the fiscal year 2006, and open them to public from November 6 to 8 in the Kyoto International Conference Hall. On November 6, about 1,300 people gathered to two public lectures followed by the exhibition and award ceremony of the RIHN Photo Contest “Water of LifeEand performance by Nagaokakyo Ensemble. The first lecture was “Crises in the Freshwater: Fundamental ConsiderationsEby Dr. Gordon Young (Former Coordinator: UNESCO World Water Assessment Program), and the second one was “The FuturabilityEby Dr. Toshitaka Hidaka (Director-General, RIHN). On November 7 and 8, two sessions of “Water ImbalancesEand “Human –Water InteractionsEwere held with approximately 240 participants. Also poster session having 51 presentations took place. In this symposium week, 1 satellite workshop by the research project 1-1 ICCAP and 3 satellite symposia such as “World Heritage, Water and PeopleE ”Water Rights, Law and GovernanceEand ”Sali-GraphyEwere carried out in the main facility of RIHN. More than 100 domestic and foreign participants discussed various topics concerning human Ewater issues. The outcomes of this first international symposium are planned for publication.
