| Program | Lecturer: Dr. AKHAPOV, Yerlan (Al-Farabi Kazakh National University/ RIHN Visiting Research Fellow) with Commentator, Mr. KADOKAWA Daisaku (The former Mayor of Kyoto) Title: Sustainable Development Challenges in Kazakhstan: An Analysis of Japanese and Kazakh Experience in Household Waste Management Abstract: Kazakhstan, in the context of rapid industrialization and urbanization, faces a range of specific environmental and economic challenges. In this regard, Kazakhstan seeks to integrate sustainability principles into economic planning, enhance infrastructure, adopt international standards, and expand public participation. Japan is recognized as one of the world’s leaders in waste management, having developed an effective system that combines cutting-edge technologies, modern legal frameworks, comprehensive recycling initiatives, and active citizen engagement. In Japan, effective household waste management (HWM) is achieved through integrated approaches such as the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) concept and the fundamental plan «A sound material-cycle society». During the stay, I’m planning to conduct a comparative analysis of Japanese and Kazakh experience in the field of household waste management. Specifically, more detailed materials will be collected regarding the legislative and regulatory framework for household waste management, such as the 3R concepts and the fundamental plan «A sound material-cycle society». There are also plans to visit elementary and middle schools in Japan, where classes on environmental education are held. In particular, a detailed study will be conducted of where 3R concepts have been implemented or are being studied. For Kazakhstan, sustainable development is a key component of its long-term environmental and economic strategy. The results of this study contribute to the improvement of sustainable environmental policies in the field of household waste management in Kazakhstan. |
