【要   旨】

The origin of irrigated rice-cultivation or wet rice-cultivation cultivation in Java to discuss of: (i) when was sawah cultivation in such island started, (ii) how have Java people been cultivated sawah in the past and at the present-time, and (iii) how should future development of sawah be carried out for producing rice that able to back-up sustainable food-production in the region? Regarding these questions, I will try to explain the history of sawah cultivation in Java during the periods of: (i) before 5th century, (ii) Indo-Javanese (5th to 15th century), (iii) Dutch colonization (16th to late 19th century), and (iv) modern sawah (early 20th century until the present-day). Future development of sawah in Java will also be discussed focusing on the strategy for maintaining food security that should be changed not only to increase rice production per unit area, but also to decrease rice-based staple food and increase other carbohydrate consumption. Therefore, the change of policy in rice consumption for all society level through food diversification program should be done.
