The purposes of the symposium is, 1) introducing the outcome of the RIHN projects and recent progress on forest utilization and biodiversity conservation, and 2) having discussion on the related issues.
After the keynote address (by T. Nakashizuka) on the aims and direction of the discussion of the symposium, we had following three sessions.
1) Forest utilization and its impacts on Biodiversity (4 presentations)
The resent studies on the effect of forest change on biodiversity were presented. In Particular the effects on plants and insect diversity, plant genetic diversity were well documented. In addition, the effect of forest change in landscape on wild life populations was also reported.
2) Sustainable forest use and local society (4 presentations)
The studies on the forest change and its drivers are reported, and the sustainability of the local communities was analyzed. The case studies in Abkuma, YakuIsland (Japan) and Sarawak (Malaysia) were reported.
3) Sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity (4 presentations)
The measures for sustainable forest use and biodiversity conservation were discussed from the aspect of local resource use, economic theory. Also the forest stewardship as one of the concrete measures was also reported.
After the presentations, we discussed on the future direction of the study on related issues. In particular, the integrating methods of interdisciplinary researches were discussed.
