Experimental Facilities

Handling of radioactive isotopes, etc. at the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature

Notification

The "Law Concerning Prevention of Radiation Hazards Due to Radioisotopes, etc." requires the establishment of a radioactivity controlled area for the analysis of radioisotopes, etc. Since the Institute of Global Environmental Studies (hereinafter referred to as "IGES") does not have experimental facilities that meet the requirements of a radiation controlled area, samples of radioisotopes, etc. cannot be brought in, stored, or analyzed at IGES.
Therefore, in order to prevent radiation hazards at RIHN, persons who bring in or send for analysis samples that are suspected of being radioactive must measure the radiation dose of the samples themselves, confirm that they meet the radiation dose standards specified in the "Law on the Prevention of Radiation Hazards Due to Radioisotopes, etc.," and send the samples to RIHN for analysis. Please contact the person in charge before sending your samples to RIHN.
When a large amount of analytical samples or analytical samples suspected of being radioactive are received, the amount of radiation is measured using a surface radiation meter. If the radiation level exceeds the standard, we will refuse to accept the sample and take steps to return it to the customer.
The cost of returning the samples will be borne by the sender of the samples. The environmental radiation monitoring at the underground experimental facility that was previously conducted has been discontinued due to the completion of related projects, but we will continue our efforts to prevent radiation hazards at the facility.

Log of Past Measurement Results

The log of past measurement results can be viewed at the following link.

The radiation measurement result logs below (December 2013 - March 2015) use a different instrument than the one used above, so the unit displayed is the integrated value for one month.
