Japan, PU to explore Cholistan Desert

RESEARCH Institute for Humanity and Nature, Kyoto, Japan, Project Leader Dr Toshiki Osada sought collaboration with Archeology Department of Punjab University for conducting explorations, excavations and conservation programmes in Cholistan Desert.
The proposed project includes survey and excavations along the dry bed of the Ghanaggar-Hakra River to find out more information on the origin, character and decline of the Indus Civilization. It also includes development and implementation of the latest conservation and preservation methods, development of museums and archaeological sites to create greater awareness among the masses and significance of the Great Indus Civilizations, setting up of a field training programme in the subject of archaeology and imparting technical training in the course of conservation, and publications of results of the expeditions in Cholistan for the research scholars in Pakistan and abroad interested in the subject. In this regard, a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the RIHN and PU has been prepared highlighting the consultancy of faculties and departments. Along with other aspects, the MOU also covers the student and faculty exchanges for research, lectures and discussions to benefit both the institutions. Finally the partners have agreed to consult the project and other relevant matters. The agreement between the two institutions will be for a period of five years.
