Lambir Hills National Park

Lambir Hills National Park (LHNP), which has been established since 1975, is located in about 30 km south of Miri, Sarawak , Malaysia (4 ß20' N, 113 ß50' E, 150-250 m a.s.l.) , and covers 6,950 ha.

In the LHNP, there are two permanent study plots; one is Canopy Biology Plot (CBP), covering 8 ha (200 X 400 m) with a canopy observation system, and established in August 1992 for the long-term monitoring of phenology and plant-animal interaction. In April 2000, a canopy crane was installed in the center of Crane Plot (CP), which had an area of 4 ha (200 X 200 m) and was located about 500 m northeast of CBP. The average monthly temperature is almost constant throughout the year, c. 26ßC, mean annual rainfall was about 2,700 mm and there is no clear dry season. The forest of LHNP is intact, mature and evergreen rain forest with the dominance of Dipterocarpaceae in the canopy and emergent layers and Euphorbiaceae, Burseraceae and Myristicaceae in the lower layers. This forest is thought to be one of the richest forests in the world in terms of the diversity of tree species.

Around LHNP

LHNP is surrounded with various types of land use including fragmented primary forests, secondary forests, swiddened fields, gardens of rubber, and so on. In August 2003, 29 line-transect plots (10 X 100 m) were set at those locations in Iban village near LHNP.
