The two major pillars of our society are the systems of market and democracy. The market system does not distribute resources for future generation. This is because that the future generation does not exist in the present world. Even if they wish somethings to be left behind for them, they could not express this in the present market system.

Furthermore, the system of democracy is the system to realize the benefit of present generation. Thus, this is not system to integrate future generation. If a candidate pledges a policy, which would benefit for future generation, he/she would not be elected.

In other words, our current systems deprive the possibility of future generation. Then, what kind of system should be constructed for future generation? We may count on the human nature of considering future generation, to improve their living as this decision and/or action would ultimately bring happiness for human beings as a whole, even if the present benefit decreases. Let us call this human nature as “Futurability.”

Future Design is aiming to construct a new social system, which would reform the systems of market and democracy, by designing and implementing the social system, which would produce Futurabiliy. This workshop is the first of kind for the researchers, who have started working on Future Design.
