Landuse Diversity and Autonomy in Southeast Asia

- 【趣 旨】
- Over the past decades, the tropic and sub-tropic regions have been undergoing drastic changes in landuse. Increasingly money-dependent societies see people rushing to frontiers, where they have brought about huge a transformation of forest to crop fields. At the same time, increasing demand for raw materials for industrial products is another factor drawing people into activities to expand farmland. Monoculture has achieved a stable supply to increasing demands in many places. However, the expansion of monoculture has been making new considerable challenges, such as land degradation.
- On the other hand, there are regions where land use is being diversified, even as similar economic settings prevailed and monoculture seemed to be rapidly spread. In mainland Southeast Asia, while the expansion of concessions for rubber and other industrial crops is seemingly unstoppable, in fact monoculture has grown within larger landuse systems. As a result, a complex mosaic of landuse has been formed.
- Is the latter landuse just one stop on the way to monoculture? Or should we assume another agricultural development model? In the coming project, we will examine agricultural development models, focusing on resource chains, household demography and political ecology in the setting of Southeast Asia. The project will culminate in a proposal for another development model that better accommodates the current development trajectories, ecological concerns and human population dynamics.
- The objective of this workshop is to elaborate a final research framework. Towards this end, we will share a wide range of recent research results and discuss a plausible hypothesis to explain the mechanisms that produce homogeneity and diversity in landuse.
