【要 旨】
Natural Crocidolite Health Hazards in DY County of Yunnan
ZHANG Yiyun (Yunnan Health and Development Research Association)
Asbestos has been widely recognized as a carcinogen harmful to humans according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the United States EnvironmentProtection Agency (EPA) and World Health Organization (WHO). While most domestic and international studies were based on workers occupational exposure to asbestos, there are few reports on populations' environemtnal exposure to low concentration crocidolite. In certain parts of DY County of the Yunnan Province there is exposed crocidolite scattered on the surface of the ground. In the 1950s' and 1980s', local residents excavated clay containing crocidolite to make asbestos furnaces, to pave roads, as well as, for painting walls. Together with the farming, this has led to man-made environmental crocidolite pollution in the region. Apart from causing air pollution, crocidolite can also pose pollution hazards to the water. Among those, the polluting of drinking water and associated health hazards have drawn increasing attention. A series of studies have been conducted by domestic scholars on the crocidolite exposure to the region, as well as, strategies and countermeasures which were subsequently presented to the government to reduce these hazards. However, after more than a decade's efforts the social impact is still somehow insignificant: crocidolite exposure is still a difficult problem to deal with; rural residents have yet to attain proper awareness of self protection; and the use of crocidolite products is still something that causes concern. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate factors of the natural environment, as well as, social ones for health hazards related to asbestos; to launch practical interventions that can transform farmers' knowledge, awareness, and behavior towards asbestos hazards; and to carry out public policy advocacy and community health promotion along these line. The DY Project Team organized by the Yunnan Health and Development Research Association has undertaken multiple investigations and epidemiological field research since December 2008.
