エル・ニーニョ（男の子）とラ・ニーニャ（女の子）が繰り広げる熱帯の恋愛物語は、世界の異常気象（旱魃や暖冬など）を引き起こす大気・海洋相互作用環である。近年では、エル・ニーニョ予報を気候感度の強い農水産物の相場の予測に繋げる研究があり、各国における貿易収支の経年変動の把握が不可欠となっている。話題提供者は、国際連合食糧農業機関の統計資料と気候データの解析結果に基づき、農水産物の貿易収支に対するエル・ニーニョ現象の影響について評価する。「熱帯の大気・海洋相互作用環が、資源変動を介して世界貿易の多様性を変化させる過程」について、セミナー参加者と議論したい。

Have you ever heard of a love story that features the El Niño (boy) and the La Niña (girl) ? It is not a boy-meets-girl romance, but a metaphor which describes the El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO). ENSO is the dominant atmosphere-ocean coupled climate mode in the tropics that can cause anomalous weather over the world and thus influence climate-sensitive agricultural and fisheries productions. A few attempts have been made to model the response of agricultural and fisheries commodities prices to ENSO. However, the mechanistic links between ENSO events and the world trades have been poorly understood.
Largely using the FAOSTAT and climate data, the speaker will address the impacts of ENSO on the world trades. He will then lead general discussion on the degree to which the ENSO-driven natural resource variability could diversify the trades and economic activities.
