要 旨:
The aim was to conduct a comprehensive non-communicable disease surveillance study in Ladakhi population and prevent the acquisition and augmentation of risk in hitherto low risk high altitude population.
Ladakh Institute for Prevention conducted the survey for health check-up in 2965 people from 2007 to 2011 in Ladakh collaborated with High-altitude project (RIHN). Ladakh population was divided into 6 blocks. Changthang in Leh district (Alt 3800m-4900m) and Zanskar in Kargil district (Alt 3000m-4000m) are the two very high altitude regions which remains cut off from rest of Ladakh for 4-6 winter months. While the changthang population depends on livestock and cattle rearing for their main livelihood, Zanskar population though farmer, have limited agricultural potentials because of the harsh weather. Cattle rearing is their second best source of income. The other four blocks are Nubra, Sham, Leh in Leh district and Panikhar, parkhachik in Kargil district.
The prevalence of hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases will be compared among the six areas and its relevance to high altitude adaptation and life style changes will be discussed.
