Landscape Transformation during the Modernisation and Regional Identity in Kyoto

In this presentation, I introduce to my research on the landscape transformation and improvement of the landscape management system according to modernization process in Kyoto. I have interest in the recent landscape transformation process of traditional shopping district (Kyomachiya), especially Kyoto-like townhouses and townscape. My second interest is alternation of regional identity in the landscape debates among Kyoto citizens concerning the construction of high-rise structures after the postwar period. It’s very interesting socio-cultural and historical events that landscape debates occurred only when high-rise structure threatened the idealised images of Kyoto.
