The Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) - Raingauge based precipitation analyses for the land areas of the Earth in support of climate research and water resources management

Mr. Tobias Fuchs
Head of the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC)/Deutscher Wetterdienst

Abstract:
"The Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC, http://gpcc.dwd.de) provides global monthly precipitation analyses for monitoring and research of the earth's climate. The centre is a German contribution to the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), to the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), and to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). GPCC is operationally implemented since 1989 at the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) under auspices of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). It contributes - based on the largest monthly in situ precipitation station database of the world - to water resources assessments, flood and drought monitoring, climate variability and trend analyses. GPCC published in year 2008 a new global precipitation climatology as well as a reanalysis of its full data base for all months of the period 1901-2007. The seminar presentation will inform about the GPCC precipitation data processing chain from precipitation measurement and its uncertainties via global in situ station data availability and data acquisition, quality control procedures and results, and the final monthly gridded GPCC precipitation analysis products and their application areas."
